Early Life and Education
Richard Robinson was born on May 24, 1969, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Nancy and singer Stan Robinson. He has an older brother named Chris. The siblings attended Walton High School in Marietta during their teenage years.
The Black Crowes
In 1984, while still students at Walton High School, Rich and Chris formed a band called Mr. Crowe’s Garden, taking inspiration from a cherished childhood fairytale. The lineup expanded in 1987 with the addition of Jeff Cease and Steve Gorman. By 1989, Johnny Colt joined the group, and they officially changed their name to the Black Crowes. The band achieved breakthrough success in 1990 with their debut album, “Shake Your Money Maker,” which peaked at number four on the Billboard 200, featuring hit singles like “Hard to Handle” and “She Talks to Angels.” Following the album’s release, Cease departed and was replaced by Marc Ford.
In 1992, the Black Crowes released their second album, “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion,” which topped the Billboard 200 and reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, producing hit singles such as “Remedy” and “Sting Me.” Their subsequent album, “Amorica,” came out in 1994 but did not achieve the same level of commercial success. This was followed by “Three Snakes and One Charm” in 1996 and “By Your Side,” which marked the band’s first album featuring bassist Sven Pipien. They concluded the decade with the release of “Lions” in 2001 before entering a hiatus in 2002.
The band reunited in early 2005, initially without Gorman, who later returned to record the 2008 studio album “Warpaint” with new members Luther Dickinson and Adam MacDougall. The album debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. The Black Crowes followed with “Before the Frost…Until the Freeze” in 2009, which also debuted at number five. Their 2010 acoustic album, “Croweology,” was released before the band initially announced their breakup in 2015. However, they reunited in 2019 and went on to release the EP “1972” in 2022, as well as their ninth studio album, “Happiness Bastards,” in 2024.
Other Musical Projects
Following the Black Crowes’ first hiatus in 2002, Rich Robinson formed Hookah Brown alongside John Hogg, Bill Dobrow, and Fionn O Lochlainn. The band debuted at Arlene’s Grocery in New York City and toured various clubs and small venues across the nation before disbanding in 2003. Robinson then pursued a solo career, releasing his debut solo album, “Paper,” in 2004, where he played guitar, bass, vocals, and several other instruments. He also started another side project called Circle Sound, featuring former Black Crowes members Luther Dickinson, Sven Pipien, and Rob Clores, along with Bill Dobrow from Hookah Brown.
In 2007, Robinson and Chris released a live album titled “Brothers of a Feather: Live at the Roxy.” Robinson later produced his second solo album, “Through a Crooked Sun,” in 2011, alongside the EP “Llama Blues.” His third solo album, “The Ceaseless Sight,” was released in 2014, followed by the EP “The Dirigible Utopia.” In 2016, Robinson launched his fourth solo album, “Flux,” under Eagle Rock Entertainment and formed the band the Magpie Salute with former Black Crowes members Marc Ford and Sven Pipien, as well as Matt Slocum, Joe Magistro, and John Hogg from Hookah Brown. The Magpie Salute released “High Water I” and “High Water II” in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
