He served as the chairman and CEO of TD Ameritrade and was the head football coach at Coastal Carolina University from 2012 to 2016 and again in 2018. Under his leadership, the team successfully transitioned from the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision to the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and achieved four Big South Conference Championships. Joe is also the author of “The Perimeter Attack Offense” and “Coach Yourself to Success: Winning the Investment Game.”

Salary

At the height of his career, Joe Moglia’s total compensation from TD Ameritrade reached $20 million annually. From 2001 to 2009, his earnings exceeded $100 million in salary alone. When he took on the coaching position at Coastal Carolina, he chose to receive a token salary of just $1, forgoing the full $177,000 owed to him.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Joseph Hugh Moglia was born on April 1, 1949, in New York City. He attended Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx from 1963 to 1967 and later enrolled at Fordham University, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics. He also obtained a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Delaware.

Moglia dedicated 16 years to coaching football, concluding his tenure as the defensive coordinator at Dartmouth College from 1981 to 1983. After the 1983 season, he made a significant career change by joining the Merrill Lynch MBA training program on Wall Street, where he was the only football coach among 26 MBA graduates.

Corporate Career

Moglia spent 17 years at Merrill Lynch, where he was involved in various executive roles across private client and institutional businesses. He oversaw the insurance company, investment products, middle-market initiatives, and the (401) k segment before moving on to become the CEO of Ameritrade Holding Corp (now TD Ameritrade) in 2001.

Under Moglia’s leadership, TD Ameritrade’s client assets grew from $24 billion to over $300 billion, and its market capitalization ballooned from $700 million to $12 billion. The company enjoyed consecutive years of record earnings and capitalized on significant acquisitions, including the major mergers with TD Waterhouse in January 2006 and Datek Online Holdings four years prior.

In March 2008, Moglia announced his plans to step down as CEO in the fall to pursue other opportunities. The search for his successor extended into the summer, culminating in Fred Tomczyk, the former COO of TD Bank Financial Group, taking over in September. Joe then transitioned to the role of chairman, succeeding J. Joseph Ricketts. In 2012, he co-founded Fundamental Global Investors with Kyle Cerminara and has held the chairman position ever since. Eight years later, in July 2020, they co-founded FG New America Acquisition Corp, a special purpose acquisition company where he serves as chairman and partner. Later that year, Moglia stepped down as chairman of TD Ameritrade following its merger with Charles Schwab Corporation.

Following his departure as CEO, Moglia joined the University of Nebraska as an executive advisor to then-head football coach Bo Pelini. On November 10, 2010, he was appointed head coach of the Virginia Destroyers, a new franchise in the United Football League. Shortly after, he served as president and head coach of the Omaha Nighthawks.

As the financial condition of the UFL deteriorated, Moglia took a position with Coastal Carolina, where he was named 2012 Big South Conference Coach of the Year, leading the team to the championship. After the 2015 season, Coastal Carolina initiated its move to the FBS, the highest level of college football. Subsequently, the school joined the Sun Belt Conference for non-football sports in July 2016 and finalized the FBS transition in 2017. On July 28 of that year, Moglia took medical leave but was cleared to resume coaching on January 5, 2018.

Retirement and Legacy

On January 18, 2019, Moglia announced his retirement as head coach of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, passing the responsibilities to his offensive coordinator and interim coach, Jamey Chadwell. While his contract extended to 2021, he believed this decision was in the program’s best interest. He retired with an impressive record of 56-22, securing four Big South Conference titles and two Big South Coach of the Year awards.

In 2021, Moglia made a considerable financial contribution to Coastal Carolina University, intended to launch the design of a $15 million indoor football practice facility and expand the university’s football infrastructure, among other projects. Although the specific amount was not disclosed, it was announced that a future academic and athletic facility would be named The Joe Moglia Center. Additionally, during the homecoming football game at his alma mater on October 7, 2023, Jack Coffey Field was renamed Joe Moglia Stadium.
